If your kids are not down right indignant while reading this book then you are doing something wrong as a parent. This story certainly started some serious conversations about social skills, feelings, and being kind.
Wonder focuses on ten year old Auggie Pullman, a funny, smart and sensitive boy who has a severe facial deformity. He has been homeschooled all of his life, but his parents persuade him to try attending a local private school for 5th grade, feeling that because other children will also be transitioning into a new school environment it may be the best time for Auggie to give it a try.
Thankfully, Auggie has a super-supportive family and so has the strength and courage he needs as he deals not only with the usual trials and tribulations of middle school, but also the reactions to his appearance and the social stigma that quickly attaches to the few kids who befriend him.
Wonder is told from multiple perspectives, providing young readers with a deeper understanding of the good and bad actions of his family, friends, classmates and others. Short chapters and great diaglogue move the story right along, we read this aloud in three night – about a total of 3 hours.
